Normal

In the following series, I photographed six individuals. While they all have different backgrounds and come from different places, they are united in two aspects: they are/were students at Brigham Young University-Idaho (a popular religious institution attended by members of the LDS church), and they are gay. As a gay student myself, attending BYU-I had its ups and down. I made amazing friends and connections, yet tended to feel somewhat ostracized at the same time. I had even been threatened to have the gay “beat” out of me.

By choosing my subjects purposefully, using similar lighting and poses, and using a variety of photographic techniques, I created uniformity throughout the series. I chose not to overtly express that which connects my subjects. This was done in order to normalize the photos which, in turn, feels like normalizing homosexuality in a heteronormative society and university.
